Carla, who often refers to herself as “goldfish gal”, has opened up about her startling realisation that she possesses very few memories from her earliest years up until the present day. Taking to social media, she raised the question of whether others shared a similar experience of being unable to recall events from more than a few years ago. In a candid clip, she said, “Does anyone else have literally no memory of anything beyond, like, four or five years ago?”

She went on, “I was born, I was six for, like, a glimpse of one weird memory, and then I was 13 for half an hour. Now I’m here – that’s it. I don’t have anything else to go by.” To her surprise, many people came forward to sympathise with her concerns.

How Does It Affect Human Memory?

Before allowing panic to set in, an expert stepped in to shed light on what constitutes a normal range of memory functioning. According to psychologist Charles Fernyhough from Durham University, the extent to which we retain memories of our lives can significantly differ from one individual to another.

Charles told New Scientist, “There are strong individual differences. It’s a characteristic of human memory that we don’t all remember the same kind of things.”

Fernyhough clarified that the memories we retain are dependent on our personal interests and emotional reactions. As long as you can perform your daily activities and engage in conversations effectively, there’s typically no need for concern.
