Even though the weather was gloomy, there were many flower bouquets and homemade signs with messages like “the one where we all lost a friend.”
These were placed on the southwest corner of Bedford and Grove, close to the Little Owl restaurant. (It’s worth noting that while “Friends” was primarily filmed in Los Angeles, the exterior shots of Monica and Rachel’s apartment were done at 90 Bedford Street in New York.)
“It feels strange to feel sad about it, but it really has been a sad morning,” said 29-year-old Catherine Schmitt, who brought flowers to Variety.
“It’s been my comfort show since I can remember. I can’t imagine watching it now without feeling deep sadness.”
While Matthew Perry’s acting career included roles in other TV series like “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip” and films such as “The Whole Nine Yards,” his name became inseparable from the endearing and sarcastic character Chandler Bing.
For a remarkable decade, he brought this character to life on the timeless classic “Friends.”
This beloved sitcom, which continues to enjoy immense popularity today, much like its heyday in the ’90s and early 2000s, not only left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape but also propelled Perry and his co-stars—Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer—into the coveted A-list of the entertainment industry.
Perry’s tragic passing occurred in his Los Angeles home, where he was found deceased in a hot tub.
According to law enforcement, no signs of foul play or drugs were present at the scene.
The exact cause of his death remains undisclosed. In his 2022 memoir, “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing,” Perry candidly shared his ongoing struggles with sobriety, as well as his enduring battles with alcohol and opioids.
The beloved actor attained fame for portraying the humorous Chandler Bing on “Friends.”
It was fitting that fans congregated outside the iconic building that served as the exterior of the show’s apartment. Running from 1994 to 2004, the series still boasts a substantial fan base today.
Perry’s name became synonymous with his character, Chandler Bing, a witty and sarcastic member of the close-knit group of friends.
