Willis is the eldest of the 3 children her mother was a journalist in the parliamentary press of the gallery. She graduated with first-class honours in 2003 with a degree in English literature from Victoria university of wellington. She went to the University of Canterbury for her post-graduate diploma in journalism and graduated in the year 2017.
