Professor Robert Thomas, a consultant oncologist at the Bedford and Addenbrookes hospitals, explained to the Daily Mail in an interview why eating burnt toast is not the best for our health.
What Is Wrong With Eating Burnt Toast?
While it is unlikely that consuming excessive amounts of burnt toast will directly result in fatalities, it is crucial to acknowledge the elevated level of risk associated with this practice. Implementing certain lifestyle adjustments, like refraining from smoking or reducing alcohol consumption, can significantly contribute to reducing health risks.
Moreover, a simple modification in toasting habits, by removing the toast slightly earlier, may marginally decrease the likelihood of developing cancer.
Yes, you read that right! Charred toast contains compounds that can progressively elevate the risk of developing cancer over time. Notably, the intensity of these compounds is directly correlated with the degree of darkness in the toast.
Why Is It Bad?
Surprisingly, in addition to its unpalatable taste, burnt toast has also been found to pose a potential risk of cancer. Doctor Thomas explained, “This is because grilling or baking starchy or sugary foods (such as bread) at high temperatures produces toxic compounds called acrylamides, which can damage your DNA and put a big strain on your immune system over time.”
He added, “And, as a rule of thumb, the darker brown they are, the more acrylamides they contain.”
