We are in the middle of a mini heat wave, and the sunlight will remain for the next few weeks.

Nearly half of us plan to improve our neglected green spaces this year, but it’s not easy on a shoestring budget.

Improving your yard for pennies may seem like a pipe dream, but there are ways to turn your yard into a paradise using only loose change.

Famed gardener David Domoney says, “By recycling the possessions in our homes, we can make improvements and solve common gardening problems without spending a penny.”

Here, the horticulturist and presenter of ITV’s Love Your Garden shares eight tips for transforming your outdoor space into a haven for less than £10.

Pot Luck – £0

Anything that contains soil can be used as a plant container, as long as you can add drainage holes in the bottom.

Old kitschy buckets can be repurposed to house a fabulous climbing plant like an ivy or lobelia.

If you have a small balcony or even a windowsill garden, the adorable little wellies your little ones have grown out of make fantastic and unusual containers.

And a lick of paint on old pots can add style to any garden.

Inspired Tire – £0

There is NO need to spend hundreds of pounds on tables and chairs.

Search the shed for paint scraps to liven up old furniture or overturned giant plant pots, which can become sturdy barbeque stools.

As trends change, you can also repaint your furniture to match.

You can buy old seats on thrift websites or auto trunk sales, but don’t underestimate the humble tire.

Find them at your local council and place a cushion on top for extra comfort, or use as plant borders.

In addition, they will not be damaged by rain.

Blooming Baskets – £3.95

HANGING baskets add touches of color to your garden and are perfect for small spaces or even indoors, as they can be hung in any area.

If you have a small decorative planter, you can make your own by attaching it to a rope plant holder (macrame plant hanger, £3.95, Etsy) and hanging it from a well-secured hook.

To keep the plant watered, punch holes in the sides of a small plastic bottle and place it in the middle of the hanging basket.

The water will slowly seep in so your thirsty flowers thrive.

Mood lighting – £7.99

GETTING the right outdoor lighting is extremely important, but often underestimated.

Twinkling lights will transform your outdoor space into a place for romance and entertainment, and most of us don’t need to buy anything.

Christmas tree lights aren’t just for the festive season.

If they are safe for outdoors, you can use them in the summer by placing them around the garden.

Shiny Buggy – £0

In addition to reducing waste, a bug hotel will provide a safe home for bugs that will help pollinate your plants, eat your pests, and keep your kids entertained in the process.

Stack three or four old wooden pallets (often free to pick up locally) on bricks set into the ground as corners.

Fill holes with loose stones, shingles, and dry leaves.

Old shingles or a patch of grass on top will keep it relatively waterproof.

If you only have limited space, fill an old drinks bottle with sticks and dried leaves.

Reach new heights – £6

A GOOD way to distract the eye from less pleasant places, like rotting fences, is to use climbing plants.

All you need to do is connect a few meters of galvanized wire (steel cable, 10m x 1.5mm, £5.64, B&Q) horizontally along where you want your plant to grow.

Green beans (Scarlet Emperor Red Bean Seeds, £1, Wilko) are a great quick fix, as they’ll grow in a few weeks over summer and burst into colorful flowers.

You can also plant carrot heads, pineapples, and wilted vegetables in a greenhouse and watch them create a collage of color.

Privacy Pallets – £0

TROWELS are a great way to protect your yard from the neighbors, and you’ll find stores and construction sites throwing them away, but ask before you take them.

You can use screws to mount them to the wall for privacy, or drill brackets if the deck is heavy.

Create a great feature with a lick of paint and hooks for hanging pots on the beams.

Pallets can even be used as furniture. Just get some cushions and bedspreads to make them more comfortable; don’t forget to bring them back inside if they are not weather resistant.

Mirror, mirror – £0

INSTEAD of throwing away an old mirror, find a suitable place to put it in your garden.

The reflection will give the illusion that your garden is larger and is a clever way to bounce light off darker corners.

Mirrors aren’t always waterproof, and glass ones will shatter at the touch of a football, so check to make sure they’re outdoor-safe.

While you are beautifying the outdoor space, you can have the children find some smooth pebbles and stones and then get down to painting them.

They make great garden markers and kids will love being creative.
