EU Postpones New Requirements For American Travelers To 2025

EU Postpones New Requirements For American Travelers To 2025

Americans viewed forthcoming travel to European countries differently following the announcement of requirements for U.S. passport holders beginning in 2024.

However, EU officials have delayed the launch of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) until spring 2025.

Schengenvisainfo.com, a website dedicated to the world’s largest visa-free zone known as the Schengen Area, where 27 European countries abolished their internal borders, first reported that an EU official confirmed ETIAS would not go live until May 2025, “due to continued delays with the implementation of the related Entry-Exit System (EES), which must be operational before ETIAS can be implemented.”

If you have previously visited Europe without a visa, you must now seek authorization through the ETIAS before going.

According to the Henley Passport Index, American travelers now have visa-free entry to 184 global destinations.

And, while the United States presently has the eighth-most powerful passport, that may change when the European Union implements stricter documentation requirements for U.S. travelers.

The application fee is 7 euros, or $7.79 US dollars, and will be available on the official ETIAS website as well as a mobile application. Email is used for all correspondence.

Once accepted for travel, visitors may stay in European countries that require ETIAS for up to 90 days within any 180 days, and travelers must have a valid ETIAS throughout their entire stay.

According to ETIAS, most applications should be handled within minutes. Still, if an application takes longer, decisions will be delivered within four days or up to 14 days if extra paperwork is requested.

The European Union recommends that travelers apply for ETIAS authorization “well in advance of your planned journey.”

Application submission confirmation will be provided via email, along with a unique number for future reference.

Travelers should double-check their name, passport number, and other information after gaining ETIAS travel authorization because any errors will prevent them from crossing the border.

If an application is denied, an email will be sent with the reasons for the decision as well as information on how to appeal.

How Long Is The ETIAS Travel Authorization Valid For?

According to the E.U., ETIAS travel authorization is valid for three years or until the travel document you used in your application expires, whichever comes first.

The ETIAS authorization is connected to a person’s travel document, such as a U.S. passport, and both are required to board an aircraft, bus, or ship to enter any of the European nations that require ETIAS.

The ETIAS authorization, like international border criteria with a passport, does not guarantee the automatic right to entrance. According to the E.U., “border guards will verify that you meet the entry conditions,” and anyone who does not match the conditions “will be refused entry.”
