Born in Wollongong, Burns owns a degree in Exercise Science (2002) and later earned Elite Athlete Program (EAP) scholarship from the University of Sydney and obtained a degree in physiotherapy. Burns later found her occupation as an Exercise Physiologist and physiotherapist. She is interested in sporting injuries as well, proven in the times when she was undergoing rehabilitation for her knee injury and took up cycling to strengthen her knee. Formerly in 2015, she raised funds for Bowel Cancer Australia by completing a 1000 Km bike ride from her hometown to Melbourne in honor of her late father who died of cancer in 2005.

Burns played for Tasmania, Wellington, Hobart Hurricanes, and Australian Capital Territory. Currently, she plays for New South Wales in the Women’s National Cricket League, Sydney Sixers in the Women’s Big Bash League, and Birmingham Pheonix In The Hundred.
In 2009-10 Burns won the Tasmanian Roar Player of the Year award. She was adorned with the same award in 2012-13 while she was a squad member of the Shooting Stars and toured to New Zealand. Eventually, in that very season, she portrayed a prominent role for the Roar in the Australian Women’s T20 Cup, by hitting 90 runs against Victorian Spirit in just 50 deliveries, including 10 boundaries and 4 sixes. Finally, towards the end of 2012, she was named the ACA women’s Player of the Month for December.
On international grounds, Burns made her Women’s One day International debut against West Indies on September 8, 2019, and her Women’s Twenty20 International debut against West Indies, on September 14, 2019.
The previous year, in January 2020, she was named in Australia’s squad for the 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
