Rice was born in Birmingham, Alabama, to Angelena Rice, a high school science, music, and oratory teacher, and John Wesley Rice, Jr., a high school guidance counselor, Presbyterian pastor, and dean of students at Tuscaloosa, Alabama’s Stillman College. Condoleezza is derived from the musical word with dolcezza, which means “with sweetness” in Italian. Rice’s family labored as sharecroppers for a period after liberation, and she has roots in the American South dating back to the pre-Civil War era. Rice’s mtDNA may be traced back to the Tikar people of Cameroon, according to the PBS documentary Finding Your Roots.
